Punjab - Modern Landmarks

Modern Landmarks

After independence Pakistan strove to express its newly found national identity through modern landmarks. This reflects itself particularly in modern structures like the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad. In addition, buildings of monumental importance such as the Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore or the mausoleum established with white marble known as Mazar-e-Quaid for the founder of the state expressed the self-confidence of the nascent state. The National Monument in Islamabad is one of the latest examples of integrating culture, independence and modern architecture.

In modern Punjab, the traditions of architecture in Punjab have been changing. The dome, minaret, the arch, the intricate mirror work and the extravagant use of ornaments which were features of the Mughal style, have now gone out of fashion. Furthermore, the changing patterns of economy, industrialization and increase in population have contributed a great deal in revolutionizing the entire basis of architectural forms.

Few examples of modern landmarks in Punjab are given below:

Minar e Pakistan – the Freedom Tower of Pakistan

Alhamra Arts Council Lahore blends modern and old architectural traditions

WAPDA House – built in 1965 and designed by George Gladstone who also designed White House Washington

Motorway – M-1, M-2
